I have a very keen interest in research in order to discover the next big ideas about learning and technology. Whether it is being part of a think tank (to brainstorm ideas), or conducting research experiments (to test hypotheses); research is what has permitted me to stay on top of the latest learning advances and technologies.
Training Solutions Innovation Think Tank
At CAE Inc., I had the opportunity to be a part of the Training Solutions Innovation Think Tank. Along with other learning development professionals and subject matter experts from the global CAE Inc. network, we discussed, executed and researched new and innovative training solution ideas. This led to standardizing CAE Inc.'s approach to assessment of learners and the evaluation of learning materials. I also had the opportunity to explore how m-Learning could be used within the world of pilot training.
Exploring the Teaching and Learning Methods for Data Structure Courses
Along with my colleague Salvador Garcia-Martinez, we conducted a research study to explore the teaching and learning methods of a university computer science course. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the challenges students and instructors encounter in a computer science data structures course. We interviewed five instructors and six practitioners in the field. The results confirmed the many widely held beliefs about teaching data structures. The main challenge that students encounter when learning the subject of data structures is the difficulty to apply theory into practice. Theoretical concepts can be explained through the use of examples and provide more opportunities in class to practice such as laboratories.
The research study was presented at the Ed-Media World Conference on Educational Media and Technology in 2010 and is published at EdITLib.
